The Wishard Hospital Replacement Facility (now known as Eskenazi) was a planned, state-of-the-art facility owned by Health and Hospital Corporation of Marion County. Eskenazi is the safety-net system open to every resident of Marion County, whether insured or not. The hospital is also home to an adult level one trauma center as well as the State of Indiana’s only adult level one burn unit. Eskenazi Hospital treats approximately 19,000 inpatients and 1.2 million outpatients per year.


Design plans were prepared by a consortium of architectural, engineering and planning consultants that include HOK Architecture; Biagi, Chance, Cummins, London, Titzer, Inc.; Blackburn Architects; BSA Lifestructures; American Structurepoint; Context; Ratio Architects; Ninebark, and VS Engineering. VS prepared stormwater, grading and hardscape design plans, as well as providing the following services:

  • Site Grading including flood protection berms and flowpaths for a catastrophic flood event
  • Design of levee penetration with sluice and flap gate closures
  • Design of cast-in-place stormwater quality units
  • Design of roofwater harvesting storm drain layout for irrigation pumping system
  • 14,000 LFT of reinforced concrete storm sewer along with an inverted siphon
  • Design of two variable frequency drive stormwater pump stations (4000 gpm and 6000 gpm)
  • Hardscape layout and design including roadways, ADA Ramps, parking lots and coordination with various specialty items such as unit pavers and snow melt systems
  • Coordination with LEED Consultant to ensure that site design satisfied credits necessary in gaining a LEED Gold rating
  • Coordination with prime consultant, design team of multiple subconsultants and regulatory agencies
